Avon Rowers Wrap Up Successful Winter Season

February 27, 2009--Kraft

Avon High School freshman Jonathon Rosow won a bronze medal in the junior men's lightweight division at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints (World Indoor Rowing Championships) in Boston -- the highlight of a strong winter showing by members of the Avon Crew team.

Rosow, who also won the recent Connecticut Indoor Championships, was third in his division, which included 200 rowers from the United States and a number of foreign countries, including Italy, Great Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada and Mexico.

He was joined in the event by fellow Avon High School rowers Alejandro Arias-Camison, Jessica Ferla, Nicole Kim, Julia Pearce, Melissa Soucie and Michael Vallen . The C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints was the third of three indoor regattas the Avon team participated in this winter. At the inaugural Highlander Challenge at Chase Collegiate School on Feb. 8, Avon won gold and silver medals in the men's open relay. The gold-medal team of Sean Holmes, Nick Johnson, Jonathon Rosow and Dan Kessler rowed the 2,000 meters in 6:43.9, edging teammates Vallen, Arias-Camison, Everett Davis and Ryan Zygmunt, who took silver.

Avon swept the Novice Junior Men's' division, led by Johnson, Zygmunt and Holmes.

Liz Panico won gold in the Lightweight Junior Women's division, while Lindsay Ontko won bronze. Rosow won the Lightweight Junior Men's division, while Vallen took a bronze. Rosow also took a second place in the Men's Open 500-meter ace. Soucie was second in the Junior Women's division. Arias-Camison was third in the Junior Men's division. Avon was second and third in the Women's Open Relay. At the Connecticut Indoor Rowing Championships on Feb. 1, Soucie was 11th in the Girls' Junior A division, and Arias-Camison was 14th in the Boys' Junior A division. The Rosow's won the Parent-Child relay, while Johnson and Holmes both rowed in the Boys' Junior B division.

The Avon High School crew team begins its second spring season of rowing in April. The team, which includes more than 60 high school rowers, practices at Batterson Park Pond and rows at regattas throughout the state.
