Eight members of the Avon High School girls' crew team combined for the
fastest time in the Stonington Erg Throwdown, an indoor rowing event
open to all Connecticut public school teams in February.
It was
one of several winter events in which Avon competed as the team prepared
for its 2010 spring season. Members of Avon Crew also took part in the
Connecticut Indoor Championships, the Highlander Challenge and the World
Indoor Championships (CRASH-B's).
At the Stonington Erg
Throwdown, the winning Avon team -- which included Emily Giaratana,
Whitney Hauswirth, Alyssa Marinello, Julia Pierce, Ada Miceli, Hanna
Soucie, Kelly Ernst and Jess Ferla -- edged teams from Stonington, East
Lyme and Glastonbury. In addition, Miceli - a sophomore at Avon HS --
had the fastest girls individual time in the event.
In the boys'
competition at Stonington, Brian Mecca of Avon was fourth in the boys'
individual competition. The Avon boys' team, which included Brian Mecca,
Nick Johnson, Brian Jennings, Nick Weist, Sean Holmes, Ryan Zygmund and
Dan Kessler, Brandon Chatfield, finished fourth.
At the
Connecticut Indoors, Avon's Mike Vallen was sixth in the junior
lightweight boys' age 16-17 competition in the event, held at Sacred
Heart University. Miceli finished 23rd in the junior girls age 14-16
competition with a personal best time.
Avon's crew of Zygmunt,
Johnson, Holmes and Everett Davis was second in the team relay event.
At the Highlander Challenge, Avon rowers took four gold, three silver
and two bronze medals. Johnson and Mecca tied for first in the boys' age
14-15-year-old competition, with Johnson also winning a relay with
teammates Davis, Holmes and Zygmunt. Mecca earned a second place in the
relay along with Jennings, Weist and Will Suter.
In the girls'
competition at the Highlander, Avon's team of Miceli, Kara Bordieri,
Hanna Soucie and Tova Weisel finished second in the relay. Weisel was
second to Miceli in the girls' 16-18 lightweight division, while
Bordieri was third in the girls' 14-15 division. Julia Pearce was fifth
in the women's 16-18 division.
Mecca set a personal best at the
CRASH-B indoors in Boston, an international event which drew rowers from
more than 25 countries.
Avon begins its third season as a
varsity crew team in March. The first regatta of the season is April 17
(a scrimmage at Mystic Seaport). The season continues through the end of
May, highlighted by the Connecticut Public Schools Rowing Association
Championships on May 16 at Lake Waramaug in New Preston.
